Let Us Raise Such Young People…
İzmir Özel Türk Koleji began its educational journey on November 15, 1950, founded by my late father, Bahattin Tatış, a young Mathematics Teacher, an idealist devoted wholeheartedly to education.
For some time, the desire to establish a private school had burned brightly in his heart. Filled with the excitement of carrying the torch of education at the forefront, the young mathematics teacher made his way to Ankara. His enthusiasm was shared by the then Chairman of the Board of Education and Discipline, who addressed him with these inspiring words:
“You are right, my esteemed teacher. If foreign colleges can exist in our country, why should there not be a Turkish College? I see that Turkish parents prefer to send their children to private schools established by foreigners. Why do they not show the same interest in Turkish schools? You must establish such a school and carry out such remarkable work that it will be pointed to as an example. I invite you to undertake this challenging struggle. Give me your word.”
My dear father could not conceal his excitement upon hearing these words and gave his promise:
“Sir, you have entrusted me with a great and demanding duty. In a sense, you have placed a national responsibility upon my shoulders. I believe that I will be able to fulfil this responsibility, and I give you my word…”
He kept his promise. On November 15, 1950, at No. 23 Talatpaşa in İzmir, he founded İzmir Özel Türk Koleji with 26 students, as the first and only school to bear the name “Türk.” Our esteemed Founder had a very clear vision:
“Let İzmir Özel Türk Koleji become the finest and most disciplined school in Türkiye, and indeed in the world. Let the scientists who graduate from this school reach a level respected by both our country and the world, and leave their mark on science. Let us raise such graduates that they achieve unparalleled success in the history of Turkish commerce; become among the most respected names in Turkish Literature and Turkish History; and become pioneers and symbols of irreplaceable achievements in industry, the economy, and national development. Let them have the honour of providing the highest level of service in the field of healthcare. In the teaching profession, let them become the pride of Türkiye and monuments to knowledge, science, morality, and virtue. Let us build such an educational and academic staff that the teachers and administrators of our school are idealistic, devoted, highly talented educators who truly understand the virtue and dignity of the teaching profession.”
For 76 years, the privilege of being a member of İzmir Özel Türk Koleji has been felt deeply in the hearts of its community through the fundamental values embodied in its mission: “To raise modern, well-balanced and happy Turkish young people who are capable of making the right choices and contributing to both themselves and their surroundings in many different ways.”
Drawing strength from its tens of thousands of graduates, İzmir Özel Türk Koleji continues to educate the Atatürkist youth of the future across 5 campuses and 6 kindergartens, to prepare the enlightened faces of our country for life, and to add new achievements to its legacy every day as it continues to walk in the light of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
